Here's a pedigree chart that Rev Gus Hall (William Augustus Hall) supplied to Claiborne McDonald II.  He lists his mother's father as Samuel (Sandy) McDonald.  I believe his Samuel is Alexander McDonald.  I've seen him listed as "Alexander S McDonald" in many places.  I have also seen where he has been listed as "Alexander (Sandy) McDonald."
